Teenage angst takes on a Life(house) of its own

Teenage angst takes on a Life(house) of its own

Not that long ago, singer/songwriter Jason Wade was a typical teenager caught between his parents and their painful divorce. But instead of trying to ease his teenage angst with destructive behavior, he said he turned to something positive.

The lead vocalist and guitarist of the rock group Lifehouse found solace in music, which turned out to be a saving grace in ways that surprised even him.

"I started writing songs more out of desperation and to express the pain I was feeling," said Wade, who will perform with Lifehouse at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Los Angeles County Fair. "It was therapy. But people started responding to them and really connecting with the lyrics. Things kind of just fell into place."

Prior to discovering his talent for songwriting at the age of 15, Wade said he wasn't all that into music. His mother played the guitar and he mostly listened to her. It wasn't until he formed his own band that he discovered artists such as Pearl Jam, Nirvana, The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel.

Drawing on those inspirations, Wade's songwriting ability blossomed. He signed his first recording contract with Dreamworks in 2000. He said the label wanted him to be a solo act but he insisted on being part of a band. "I wasn't comfortable with being on stage alone," said Wade, 28. "I've always liked playing and traveling with friends."

Record execs at Dreamworks agreed to give Wade what he wanted and started a search for musicians. After auditioning several, Wade and the label decided on drummer Rick Woolstenhulmer, 29. And after several lineup changes, bass player Bryce Soderberg, 28, joined the band in 2004.

Lifehouse released its first CD, "No Name Face," in 2000. It was a smash, selling nearly 2.6 million copies. The project produced the No. 1 alternative hit "Hanging By a Moment," which became the Top 40's most played song in 2000.

The group's early success led to opportunities to open for Matchbox 20, the Goo Goo Dolls and The Rolling Stones on tour.

"I was so nervous when we were opening for the Stones," said Wade, a native of Camarillo. "I didn't even get to enjoy it because I was overwhelmed and had a lot of fear. But now, I'm enjoying every aspect of it and all the touring is starting to pay off."

Lifehouse's second release, 2002's "Stanley Climbfall," didn't fare so well in sales. But the band's third CD, "Lifehouse," produced another hit, "You and Me." The song spent more than 60 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and sold more than 100,000 digital downloads.

Still, Wade said Lifehouse has only recently discovered its musical niche with its fourth CD, "Who We Are." The songs on "Who We Are" define the band's music as stripped down rock, driven by raw emotion.

Wade wrote or co-wrote all the tunes for the project and the entire band collaborated on the production. Among the tracks are: "Disarray," "Whatever It Takes," "The Joke," "Mesmerized" and "Storm."

"This time around it was not about having any preconceived notions," said Wade. "It was about letting the tape machine roll and getting the music down spontaneously.

"I'm at a place where it doesn't matter to me what other people think. I'm comfortable being myself and I'm writing from an honest place not thinking about who's going to hear it."

Lifehouse's newfound philosophy must be working. Since the release of "Who We Are" in June, the CD's third single "Broken" peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. The music video for the song was directed by actor Keifer Sutherland and debuted in September on VH1's top 20 countdown.

Despite Lifehouse's recent success, Wade says the most fulfilling part of the journey is that he and his bandmates finally have a chance to be what they wanted to be all along - a rock band aimed at touching the hearts of everyone they play for.

"We have really grown into a unit with its own personality and style," said Wade. "We established camaraderie on the road and jelled. This record defines who we are, which is why that's the title. The sound fits where we're at right now."

Gavin Rossdale, former lead singer and guitarist for the post-grunge band Bush, will open for Lifehouse. Rossdale, who is married to singer Gwen Stefani, will perform songs from his critically-acclaimed CD "Wanderlust.

New Date @ the Show Lounge in Canada

New Date @ the Show Lounge in Canada

Date: Friday - Oct 31, 2008
Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Show Lounge

With Who We Are, their fourth album in seven years, Lifehouse are really starting to enjoy the fruits of their success and have some fun. Their multi-platinum 2000 debut, No Name Face, produced Hanging by a Moment, a #1 alternative hit which crossed over to become Top 40’s Most Played Song and won a Billboard Music Award for Hot 100 Single of the Year. 2005’s self-titled platinum effort yielded You and Me, a giant hit ballad that set a record by spending more than 60 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, Lifehouse are not just the sum of their considerable accomplishments.

On Who We Are, singer-songwriter Jason Wade — along with drummer Rick Woolstenhulme and bassist Bryce Soderberg — gets back to the basics of what made him first form the band while still a teenager in suburban California. Producing themselves for the first time with Jude Cole, who also co-wrote several of the new songs, that joy comes across unfettered on the rocking twang of the lead single, First Time, already climbing the Hot A/C and Top 40 charts, a fond look back at the butterflies and excitement of the initial rush of romance. Songs off the new album include: The Joke, Broken, Make Me Over, Disarray & Storm. With all their radio airplay, multi-platinum sales and awards, Lifehouse are still intent on raising the bar, which makes Who We Are a revelation both musically and lyrically.
